ADAA Students Attend Kali Workshop with Martial Arts Legend Guro Dan Inosanto

Several members from the Keller, TX location of the American Defensive Arts Academy Kali program attended a seminar taught by the legendary Dan Inosanto this past weekend. It is always a highlight of the year to participate in a workshop with Guro Dan but this year was definitely a special event. We covered material from a variety of styles within the Filipino Martial Arts systems- Empty hand, single stick, and double stick tactics/coordination drills were covered in Guro’s signature teaching style. Guro Dan was incredibly complimentary to our students, and Malani Sampath was even given the honor of demonstrating her trapping skills with Guro himself. Mr. Martinez and Miss Osborne were also called up several times to demonstrate the material for the class. Overall, it was a fantastic experience for those in attendance, and we will surely be working on the lessons learned for some time to come. Here are some thoughts from other ADAA members who have attended Guro’s workshop in the past.

“ This seminar was an exciting opportunity to work with a living legend. Guru Dan demonstrated his superior knowledge of Filipino Martial Arts as well as JKD. He was an engaging presenter as he shared his interesting stories from a historical perspective”.

Kerensa P.

“It’s a huge thrill and an inspiration to be in the room with Guro Dan. He’s 82, but he doesn’t look it, doesn’t “act” it and moves incredibly fast, very smoothly. “Living legend” is not an exaggeration. It definitely inspires me to keep going forward with what I’m doing. I know I have little chance of reaching the levels that he has, but I also know I can keep going further.”

-David G.

“This was the second time I attended Guro Dan’s Workshop. I definitely learned more from Guro and Joel than last year. Besides, I had a chance to hang out with my ADAA friends outside of class. Overall I had a good time, and am looking forward to going to the Workshop next year.”

-Bach N.

“The Inosanto seminar was an incredible experience! Guro Dan was a fantastic teacher. I was amazed by the amount of material we covered, and I learned so much within just a few hours. I am really happy I went. It was worth every second.”

-Malani S

Why everyone should study martial arts

As our digitally connected lives get busier and busier many people are finding it harder to make time to exercise their bodies and connect with other real people. Yet exercise and personal connections are proven to help people live longer and healthier lives. Martial arts training not only can improve your body and mind but the time spent training with others on the mat can create deep and lasting relationships.

Several of these benefits are listed here:

Total body workout: Martial arts are a high-aerobic workout that uses every muscle group in the body. Your stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and strength will all improve through martial arts.

Muscle tone: By participating in martial arts, you can significantly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your body. The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently the more calories you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and promote weight loss. High levels of muscle mass also lead to increased agility, thus preventing falls as you age.

Healthy lifestyle: Due to the total-body nature of a martial arts workout, tons of calories are burned during every class. However, you’ll also find that your natural eating signals become better regulated so food cravings will disappear, and you’ll eat less as a result.

Self-confidence: Due to the goal setting, positive encouragement and respect for values that are part of all martial arts programs, the most significant benefit usually reported by martial arts students is greater self-confidence. You become more comfortable in all situations – whether you’re in danger or merely doing a task that takes you beyond your comfort zone — and you’ll discover you can accomplish anything you set your mind.

Improved cardiovascular health: Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular system is by participating in activities that stress the heart, such as martial arts.
Weight loss: A typical one-hour session of moderate intensity martial arts can quickly burn up to 500 calories.

Improved reflexes: Research has found that by participating in martial arts, you not only improve your reflexes while performing the activity but actually experience faster reaction times during all events of your life. This is very important in many daily activities, such as driving.

Focus and stillness: As Bruce Lee pointed out, behind the punches, kicks, and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and see where his weaknesses are. As a martial artist, you will learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused.

Character & values: Martial arts wisdom has it that after consistent practice, one becomes less impulsive and aggressive towards others. Respect for yourself and others is at the heart of the bow in martial arts, and that lesson is reinforced every time a student steps on to the training mat.

Better mood: Studies show that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve your mood. Performing martial arts is not only an excellent way to relieve stress and frustration but may actually help to make you happier. The endorphins released by physical activity appear to be active in your body for as many as four hours after exercise.

To get these benefits for yourself just come to any of our martial arts classes in Keller, TX.

Stranger Danger Report in Keller

In an effort to keep you informed about safety concerns in our community, we wanted to make you aware that KISD was notified yesterday about a stranger danger situation involving a Hillwood Middle School student.
The parent reported to the Fort Worth Police Department that the student was walking home sometime around 4:15 p.m. along Parkwood Hill Boulevard and was approached by a man in a car. The man told the student that he was sent by the student’s mother to pick the student up. Not recognizing the man, the student refused to get in the car, at which time the man attempted to grab the student before the student ran away. The car began to follow the student but eventually stopped.
At ADAA all our member's and their families safety is our top priority, and as with any time we receive a report like this, we encourage parents to talk with your student about staying safe. Here are some useful tips for child safety you may want to discuss with your student:
  • Never talk to a stranger. If a stranger tries to talk to you, run away and find the nearest trusted adult. If the stranger attempts to follow you, continue running and yell, “Stranger Danger!”
  • Walk to and from school or bus stops in groups.
  • Never accept a ride without first getting permission from your parents.
  • Never take shortcuts; always stick to the route you have agreed upon with your parents, and stay on main roadways.
  • Never let people know if you are going home alone.
  • Have your parent help you make a list of safe places you can go for help along walking routes.
  • Never leave school with anyone without checking with school officials.
If you have questions or information regarding this specific incident, we encourage you to reach out to the Fort Worth Police Department.

Changes for March 2020

Starting in March The Keller Point should be able to start auto-renewing your ADAA martial arts program tuition. That means you should not have to go up to the front desk every month to re-enroll. The new system that enables this feature has some limitations in how it can handle discounts so we've updated our Family Plan terms to accommodate this.
Going forward the Family Plan is now 100% off the 3rd direct family member and beyond. You only have to pay for 2 tuitions at ADAA and the entire family can train in our programs. This does mean that it is now 2 standard tuition payments without any percentage off other than The Keller Pointe 20% discount. This is due to the Point's new System only being able to apply 1 discount (which is the TKP Member discount). We hope that the new plan is exciting to families and encourages more family members to join in the fun on the mat.

Program Pricing for Karate and Aikido
  • $105 for members of The Keller Point
  • $125 for non-members
  • $175 for All Access Pass

Online registration and enrollment is now live and can be accessed here or in your ADAA member app.

Class check-in.
For March we will start tracking attendance towards Rank Promotion. Each student will be able to check-in for classes on a tablet or computer every class. In the coming weeks, we will be setting up student accounts and getting student IDs assigned.
Quarterly Testing dates for 2020. Get them in your calendar as soon as possible.
  • May 16th
  • August 29th
  • November 14th

Update on all programs with KISD closing due to COVID-19 Mar 16-27

To all ADAA program students and families,
This morning KISD announced a closure of all public schools and extra-curricular activities following the recommendations of the Tarrant County Health Department. The City of Keller is meeting today to decide what impact COVID-19 (Coronavirus) will have on operations at The Keller Pointe. The health and safety of our members and staff is always our top priority whether on or off the mat so we have decided it is in everyone's best interest to follow the same procedure and not offer group classes or private in lessons at this time. To limit potential exposure we encourage everyone to stay away from large gatherings of people, aka Social Distancing. If we all work together during this short period we will help "flatten the curve" of the spread of the coronavirus.

During this period we will offer online training through our FB Page and Group, our YouTube LIVE page and working on ways to have live video and daily workouts in your ADAA app as well. In addition, we will offer all ADAA students who have enrolled for March 2020 a FREE 30 Minute private lesson with Folmar or Martinez Senseis ($50 value) as our way to help keep everyone back on track once we are back on the mat!

In the meantime, let's have a March Leaderboard training challenge raffle for two prizes; A pair of Hayabusa Gloves and Century C-Gear Sparring set to be awarded to winners drawn randomly from the March 2020 ADAA App Leaderboard!

Christopher Folmar's mobile number is (817) 673-0935 if you have any questions you want to ask privately.

Thank you for your flexibility and wash your hands!
